Instability

Beyond the immediate security causes that have plunged the region into current crisis we have today, Sahelian states suffer from deep and structural weaknesses that have contributed largely to the destabilization of the area in recent years. These underlying causes of instability include a very strong demographic expansion that is little or not controlled; extreme poverty; environmental stress causing drought and climatic hazards; precarious governance systems; and a devastating corruption phenomenon for the Sahelian economies.
